It sits on the upper North Island. The land stretches from the Coromandel Peninsula in the north to the slopes of Mount Ruapehu in the south. It spans the whole island from the Tasman Sea in the west to the east coast.

This region is the fourth largest in the country by area and population. It is home to many different areas like the Waikato District and Hamilton City. Many people also live in the Taupō District and the Coromandel Peninsula.

The land in Waikato has many different shapes and feels. To the west, you will find the Tasman Sea and rough hill country. There are three large natural harbours there named Raglan, Aotea, and Kāwhia. Near Raglan, the beaches have black sand from volcanoes.

In the middle, there is a broad, flat area called the Waikato Plains. Most people live on these plains because the land is so good for farming. To the east, the land rises into forested mountains like the Kaimai and Mamaku Ranges. The weather is mild and stays quite warm most of the year.

The name Waikato comes from the Waikato River. In the Māori language, the name means "flowing water." Specifically, "wai" means water and "kato" refers to the pull of a river current in the sea.

The river is a huge part of the region's life. It flows out of Lake Taupō, which is the largest lake in the country. People also use the upper parts of the river to make electricity. They do this using large lakes like Lake Karapiro. This lake is also a famous place for world-class rowing.

Farming is a very big part of how people live and work here. The mild weather and lots of sunshine help grass grow very quickly. Because the grass grows so well, many farmers raise dairy cattle. In 2016, there were about 1.41 million cows in the Waikato. Most of these farms are owned by families. Some farmers use special machines to milk large herds in under two hours. Besides dairy, people also grow crops like maize and make wine in the north.

Many different towns and cities make up the Waikato. Hamilton is the biggest city and is a busy place for students and workers.
