The name comes from the Waikato River. In the Māori language, it means "flowing water."

The river flows from Lake Taupō. It is a very important part of the land. Most people live on the flat Waikato Plains. This area is great for farming. Many people raise dairy cattle there. The weather is mild and the sun shines a lot. This helps the grass grow very fast for the cows.

Hamilton is the biggest city in the region.
