The weather in Apia is tropical and warm all year. It has a tropical rainforest climate. This means the temperature stays consistent throughout the year. The trade winds are a very important part of the weather. There are also some cyclones in the area. The wettest months are from December through March. During these months, the rain is very heavy. The driest months are July and August.

The city can face flooding during the wet season. This happens because the city is built on a low valley.

Apia has a very long and interesting history. It started as a small village in the 1800s. At that time, the population was only 304 people.

A high chief named Seumanutafa Pogai led the village. The modern city was founded in the 1850s. It has been the official capital since 1959. In 1889, a big storm hit the harbour. Seven ships from Germany, the US, and Britain were there. Most of the ships sank or were badly damaged. Only one British ship, the Calliope, managed to leave.

Many different groups have ruled or visited Apia over time. Germany ruled Western Samoa from 1900 to 1914. In 1914, New Zealand forces began an occupation. New Zealand governed the islands until 1962. During this time, the Mau movement fought for independence. There were many peaceful protests in the streets. On December 28, 1929, a sad event called "Black Saturday" happened. During a peaceful gathering, the New Zealand police killed a chief named Tupua Tamasese Lealofi III. Later, the US Navy built a base there from 1941 to 1944.
