Apia is the capital and largest city of Samoa.

It is located on the central north coast of Upolu. Upolu is the second-largest island in the country. The city sits within the Tuamasaga political district. Geographically, Apia is built on a narrow coastal plain. It is situated at the mouth of the Vaisigano River. A natural harbour provides a place for ships to dock. This harbour is the largest and busiest in Samoa.

The climate in Apia is a tropical rainforest climate. This is known as an Af climate in the Köppen classification. Temperatures remain consistent throughout the entire year. Trade winds act as the dominant aerological mechanism here. These winds influence the weather patterns across the region. While it is tropical, it is not strictly equatorial. The area also experiences occasional cyclones. The wettest months are December through March. During this time, monthly precipitation easily exceeds 10 inches. July and August are the driest months. The city receives roughly 100 inches of rainfall annually.

Apia is a complex urban area made of many parts. It is not managed by a single city administration. Instead, it consists of about 45 individual villages. Some of these are traditional villages with their own leaders. Others are known as freehold villages. These villages have no traditional village council. The Apia Urban Area includes the Tuamasaga political district. It also covers parts of the Vaimauga and Faleata election districts. The city's growth has been somewhat haphazard over time. It evolved from a small village to a colonial trading post. Now, it serves as the country's main financial centre.

The history of Apia is filled with significant events. In 1800, the population was only 304 people.

A high chief named Seumanutafa Pogai led the village. In 1889, a major naval standoff occurred in the harbour. Seven ships from Germany, the US, and Britain were present. They refused to leave despite an approaching typhoon. Most ships sank or were damaged beyond repair. Only the British cruiser Calliope escaped by moving at one mile per hour. Later, Germany ruled the area from 1900 to 1914. New Zealand then governed the islands until 1962.

Political struggles shaped the modern identity of Apia. The Mau movement organised a struggle for independence. This movement used non-violent protests and marches. Many Samoans were arrested during these demonstrations. A tragic event occurred on December 28, 1929. This day is known as "Black Saturday." During a peaceful Mau gathering, New Zealand police killed the paramount chief, Tupua Tamasese Lealofi III. Later, the United States Navy operated Naval Base Upolu from 1941 to 1944. These historical shifts helped lead to Samoan independence in 1962.

Today, Apia is a major hub for commerce and education. The city contains the National University of Samoa. It is also home to the University of the South Pacific School of Agriculture.

Many multi-storey buildings now define the skyline. These include the Tui Atua Tupua Tamasese Building and the ACC building. The city also features the Bahá’í House of Worship. This building opened in 1984 and serves many religions.

The economy is supported by various local businesses. About 60% of downtown businesses are owned by the local community. One Chinese family owns 30% of these businesses. Europeans own 10% of the downtown businesses.

Infrastructure and geography present unique challenges for the city. Apia is built on a low, flood-prone valley. This causes frequent flooding during the wet season. In the village of Sogi, there are issues with shoreline pollution. This is because the village sits on swamplands. The lack of a unified legislative approach affects sewage disposal. To help, the Planning and Urban Management Act 2004 was passed. This established the Planning Urban Management Authority. It aims to manage the unique growth of the urban area.

Travel and landmarks connect Apia to the wider world. Apia Harbour handles international shipping and fuel. Ferries also depart from here for Tokelau and American Samoa. Faleolo International Airport is a 40-minute drive to the west.

The city is also famous for its connection to literature. The writer Robert Louis Stevenson lived here for four years. He took the Samoan name "Tusitala," meaning "writer of tales." He is buried on Mount Vaea, which overlooks the city.
