geography Maturity 7-9 Next article →

The Samoan Islands are a beautiful group of islands in the central South Pacific. They are part of a large region called Polynesia. This group includes 18 different islands that stretch from west to east.

Most of the larger islands were made by volcanoes. These islands are mountainous and covered in thick, green, tropical forests. Some of the smaller islands are coral atolls. These have beaches made of black sand.

Scientists have a theory about how these islands were made. They think a hotspot helped create them. A hotspot is a place where heat comes up from deep inside the Earth.

As the Earth's crust moves over this fixed heat, volcanoes can form. This often creates a long line of islands. Some scientists once found the ages of the rocks confusing. However, new samples from deep underwater helped prove the hotspot idea is likely correct.

History shows that many people have visited these islands. The oldest evidence of humans living there is from around 1050 BC. In 1768, a French explorer named Bougainville visited the eastern islands. He called them the Navigator Islands.

Later, in the late 1800s, three strong lands—the United States, Germany, and the United Kingdom—competed for control. This led to a treaty in 1899 that split the islands into two parts.

Today, the islands are divided into two different jurisdictions. The western part is the Independent State of Samoa. It gained independence from New Zealand in 1962. Its capital is Apia and its money is called the Samoan tala. The eastern part is American Samoa, which is a territory of the United States. Its capital is Pago Pago and it uses the US dollar.

The two parts are separated by ocean water.

About 250,000 people live across the islands. Most people share the Samoan language and a culture called fa'a Samoa. They also use a way of governing called fa'amatai. The islands have many different sizes and shapes. Savai'i is the largest island and has the highest peak, Mt. Silisili. In American Samoa, the island of Tutuila is the largest. Ta'u is the highest island in that group, with Lata Mountain.
