Many Samoan speakers live in other places too. These people are part of a group called the diaspora. This includes many people living in New Zealand and Australia. In New Zealand, it is the third most spoken language.

Learning how to speak Samoan is very interesting. The alphabet uses 14 letters. Sometimes, people use three extra letters for words from other languages.

One special sound is called a glottal stop. We write this sound with a mark that looks like an inverted comma. This tiny break in sound can change a word's meaning. For example, one word might mean "from" and another might mean "sickness." The length of a vowel can also change a word. The word "tama" means child, but "tamā" means father.

Samoan belongs to a large family of languages. Scientists call this the Austronesian family. It is part of the Polynesian branch.

This means it is a relative of other famous languages. It shares many similar words with Hawaiian and Māori. You might see words like "atua" or "tapu" in different Polynesian languages. Some experts group Samoan with languages from Eastern Polynesia. Others look at how the grammar and words work together. These patterns help us understand how languages grow over time.

There are many facts about how many people speak Samoan. In 2015, experts estimated there were 510,000 speakers worldwide. About half of these people live in the Samoan Islands.

In New Zealand, over 101,000 people spoke the language in 2018. In Australia, about 49,021 people spoke it in their homes. More than 180,000 Samoan speakers live in the United States. This is much more than the people living in American Samoa. These numbers show how much the language travels across the ocean.

Samoan has many special ways of being used. There is a formal way to speak during news or sermons. There is also a casual way used in daily life.
