It is part of a group of islands called the Bismarck Archipelago. This group was named after a man named Otto von Bismarck. The island sits northeast of another island called New Britain. A body of water called Saint George's Channel separates the two islands. New Ireland is also near the Bismarck Sea and the Pacific Ocean.

Many people live on the island, with about 120,000 people in the area.

The land on the island has a very interesting shape. Some people say it looks like a musket gun. A steep and rugged mountain spine runs through the middle. The highest point is Mount Taron in the Hans Meyer Range. Other mountain ranges include the Tirpitz, Schleinitz, Verron, and Rossel ranges. The island is located between two and five degrees south of the equator. Most of the land was once covered in thick, dense rainforest.

People have lived in this region for a very long time. The first people arrived about 33,000 years ago. They sailed there from what is now Papua New Guinea. Later, the Lapita people arrived about 3,000 years ago. European sailors first visited the island in 1616. They were Dutch sailors named Jacob Le Maire and Willem Schouten. Later, explorers like William Dampier and Philip Carteret visited the island too.

History on the island has changed many times. In the 1800s, whaling ships often stopped at the island. They came to get water, wood, and food. One ship called the Resource visited in 1799. The last known whaling ship was the Belvedere in 1884. From 1885 to 1914, the island was part of German New Guinea. During that time, it was called Neumecklenburg. Today, a road called the Boluminski Highway still serves the island.

There are many special traditions and plants on New Ireland. The island has lowland rainforests and high mountain rainforests. Some of these forests are being lost to logging.

The local people have unique ways of making art. They practice things called Kabai, Malagan, and Tubuan. Malagan is a type of art used for funerals. They also make Tatanua masks and Kulap sculptures made of chalk limestone. The town of Kavieng is the main center for the island. It sits at the very northern end of the land.
