The island is the largest in the Solomon Islands archipelago. To the north lies the much smaller Buka Island. A deep, wide stretch of water called the Buka Strait separates them. There is no bridge to cross this water. Instead, people use a regular ferry service to travel between settlements.

Nature is very active on the island. Much of the land is covered in thick tropical rainforests. There are several volcanoes that are active or dormant. One volcano, named Bagana, is very active in the north central part. It puffs out gas that people can see from many kilometers away. The highest point on the island is Mount Balbi. The island also has a tropical rainforest climate. This means it stays warm and wet, though February is the driest month.

Humans have lived on these islands for a very long time. During the last Ice Age, the area was part of a larger landmass called "Greater Bougainville." The earliest evidence of people is at Kilu Cave on Buka Island. These settlers lived there between 26,700 and 18,100 BCE. Later, Austronesian people arrived and brought animals like pigs and chickens. In 1768, a French explorer named Louis Antoine de Bougainville arrived. He named the island after himself.

History has brought many different groups to the island. In 1899, the German Empire claimed the land. Later, Australia took control of the area. During World War II, Japan invaded the island in 1942. Allied forces fought a campaign there to regain control in 1943. During this war, a Japanese admiral named Isoroku Yamamoto died when his plane crashed. Between 1988 and 1998, the island also went through a civil war. This was a very hard time that cost many lives.

The island is known for its natural resources. It has one of the largest copper deposits in the world. The Panguna mine has huge amounts of copper ore and gold. However, mining has caused big changes to the environment. Many people live on the island and follow the Christian faith. Most are Roman Catholic. People speak many local languages, but they often use Tok Pisin to talk to each other. In 2019, citizens voted to become an independent country. The government of Papua New Guinea will make the final decision.
