Arawa is a large town in Bougainville. It sits in the Autonomous Region of Bougainville. This region is part of Papua New Guinea. Arawa was once the capital city of the area. A civil war caused much damage to the town. Because of this, the capital moved to Buka. People have plans to rebuild the town. They hope to make Arawa the capital again one day.

The town sits on land that was once a big farm. This place was called the Arawa Plantation. A company called Bougainville Copper Ltd needed a main office. They wanted a place to work with the government. The plantation was a good choice for this job. It was near the old district center of Kieta. The old center was too small to grow any larger.

Many important places sit near Arawa. There is a port at Loloho in Anewa Bay. This port is north of the town. Ships use this port to carry goods. A small port also sits near Kieta. This older port helps move farm products onto cargo ships. South of Kieta, the Aropa Airport is very busy. The airport sits right next to the sea.

The town grew very fast during the 1970s and 1980s. It gained many new homes and shops. Large public schools were built there. There are also old Roman Catholic schools in Kieta. The town has a public library and many hotels. You can find restaurants and even a film theatre there. People in the area really enjoy watching films.

Religion is also a big part of life here. Many people belong to the Roman Catholic Church. Some belong to the Methodist United Church. Other groups like Lutherans and Anglicans also work in the area. These groups sometimes show videos to help people learn. This happened on both Bougainville Island and Buka Island. These groups were not in the area before the Panguna mine was built.
