geography Maturity 11-13 Next article →

The Indigirka is a long river in Russia. It is in the Sakha Republic. The river sits between the Yana river and the Kolyma river. It starts where two rivers meet. These are the Tuora-Yuryakh and the Taryn-Yuryakh. The river flows north through many hills and ranges. It flows through the Chersky Range. It also flows through the Moma Range.

The river is very cold. It freezes in October. The ice stays until May or June. Many kinds of fish live in the water. People catch whitefish like omul and muksun. Some people also look for gold in this area. Ust-Nera is the largest town on the river. It is a center for gold mining.

At the end, the river forms a wide delta. A delta is where a river splits into many arms. These arms flow around flat islands. The river ends in the Kolyma Bay. This bay is part of the East Siberian Sea. The water flows into the sea through many small streams.
