Dezhnyov sailed with a group of men. They used boats called koches. The trip was very hard. Many boats were lost in the ice and storms. Only a few men made it to the Anadyr River.

Dezhnyov did something amazing. He sailed through the Bering Strait. This is the water between Asia and America. He did this 80 years before Vitus Bering. For a long time, people forgot his story. They thought Bering found the way first.

Later, people found Dezhnyov's old reports. They learned he was the first European to sail there. Now, a large cape in Russia is named after him. Even a crater on Mars has his name.
