We do not know much about his early life. One writer said he was an Arabic-speaking man from Azemmour. Azemmour is a town in Morocco on the coast. In 1522, he was sold as a slave to a Spanish nobleman. His name was Andrés Dorantes de Carranza. This man later took Estevanico on a long trip to the Americas. Estevanico had to change his religion to travel with his master. This was because Spanish rules at the time were very strict.

His big journey began with the Narváez expedition in 1528. This group of 300 men wanted to explore Florida. The trip was full of hard jobs and dangers. Storms and strong winds hit their ships. Many men were lost during these bad storms. Estevanico and a few others survived a shipwreck near Texas. They were held by Native Americans for several years. Finally, in 1534, Estevanico and three other men escaped. They began walking across the land to find safety.

These four men traveled nearly 2,000 miles. They walked through the American West and Northern Mexico. During this time, they became medicine men. This means they used their skills to help heal people. Because they helped others, many villages treated them with respect. People gave them food, shelter, and special gifts. Sometimes, thousands of people would follow them to the next village. Estevanico was a great guide because he learned local languages. They finally reached a Spanish settlement in Sinaloa in July 1536.

After his long walk, Estevanico's stories reached many people. They heard about wealthy cities in the north. A leader named Antonio de Mendoza wanted to find these places. He asked a man named Fray Marcos de Niza to lead a search. Estevanico was chosen to be a guide for this new group. In 1539, the expedition left from Culiacán. Estevanico traveled ahead of the main party to find the cities. He wore bells and feathers to show his role as a medicine man. He even used a gourd rattle to help him work.

Tragedy happened near a place called Cíbola. The people in a local village attacked Estevanico. Some stories say he was killed with arrows. People still wonder why the attack happened. Some think the villagers were angry with him. Others think they saw him as a strange sorcerer. A writer named Álvar Núñez Cabeza de Vaca wrote about these events. His book was the first to describe the animals and plants of the American West. It even described the American bison. Estevanico's life was a story of great survival and discovery.
