He was born in a town called Azemmour. Long ago, he was sold into slavery. In 1528, he joined the Narváez expedition. This group went to explore Florida. The trip was very hard. Storms and shipwrecks hurt the group. Estevanico and three other men survived. They were held by Native Americans for a time.

In 1534, the four men escaped. They walked nearly 2,000 miles. They became medicine men. This means they helped heal people. Many villages treated them with respect. They gave the men food and gifts. Estevanico was a great guide. He learned how to speak to many people.

Later, he helped a new group find wealthy cities. He wore bells and feathers. He went ahead of the main party. Sadly, he was killed by people in a village. People have many ideas about why this happened. Some say he was a guide. Others think he was seen as a sorcerer.
