Gustav Ludwig Hertz was a famous German physicist. He was born in Hamburg on July 22, 1887. He spent his life studying the tiny parts of our world. Hertz is best known for a very important discovery. He found the laws that govern how an electron hits an atom. An electron is a tiny particle found in all matter. This discovery was so important that it earned him a Nobel Prize in Physics in 1925.

His discovery happened through a special test with a friend. In 1914, Hertz and James Franck performed an experiment on gases. They looked at what happens when electrons collide with atoms. These are called inelastic collisions. In this process, the electron loses some of its energy to the atom. This helped scientists understand how atoms work. This work was a major step for physics.

Hertz had a long and busy career. He studied at universities in Göttingen, Munich, and Berlin. He earned his Ph.D. in 1911 under Heinrich Rubens. Later, he worked at the Philips Incandescent Lamp Factory in Eindhoven. He also served as a director for science institutes in Halle and Berlin. He even developed a way to separate isotopes using a method called gaseous diffusion.

Life was often difficult for Hertz during hard times in history. He served in the military during World War I. In 1934, he was forced to leave his job in Berlin. This happened because of laws that targeted people with Jewish ancestors. Later, after World War II, he moved to the Soviet Union. He led a large research group in a place called Agudseri. Nearly 300 Germans worked at his institute during the late 1940s.

Even in a new country, Hertz continued to do great science. He worked on things like ultrasound and gas discharges. In 1951, he won the Stalin Prize. He also received the Max Planck Medal from the German Physical Society. His two sons, Carl and Johannes, both became physicists just like him. Hertz lived a long life and died in Berlin in 1975 at age 88.
