Max Born was a very important theoretical physicist.

He helped build the foundation of quantum mechanics. This is the study of how the tiniest parts of our world work. He also studied how light moves and how solid objects behave. His work was so important that he won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1954. He shared this prize for his research into the math of the tiny world. Specifically, he found a way to use math to show where tiny particles might be. This idea is called the statistical interpretation of the wavefunction.

Born's work followed a very careful path of discovery. He first studied how wires and tapes stay stable. Later, he looked at how metal and halogens react together. This specific process is called the Born–Haber cycle. In 1925, he worked with Werner Heisenberg to create matrix mechanics. This was a new way to describe quantum mechanics using math. A year later, he gave a standard way to use the Schrödinger equation. He used a special tool called a probability density function. This math helps scientists predict where a particle will be found.

Born's journey began in Breslau, which is now called Wrocław in Poland. He was born on 11 December 1882. He was the son of a professor named Gustav Jacob Born. Max went to the University of Göttingen in April 1904. There, he met famous mathematicians like David Hilbert and Hermann Minkowski. Hilbert even chose him to be a special assistant. Born won a prestigious university prize for his work on elastic wires. He even had to serve in the German Army for a short time. He was discharged early because of an asthma attack in 1907.

Born had a very busy and successful career. He moved to Berlin in 1915 to work for the Army. He later returned to Göttingen, which became a top center for physics. He taught many famous scientists like Enrico Fermi and Wolfgang Pauli. In 1933, things changed because the Nazi Party took power in Germany. Born was from a Jewish family, so he was stopped from teaching. He moved to the United Kingdom to work at Cambridge. In 1936, he became a professor at the University of Edinburgh. He became a British citizen on 31 August 1939.

We can see Born's impact in the science we learn today. His textbook, Atomic Physics, became a standard book for students. He also wrote a book for everyone called The Restless Universe. Many of the great scientists of his time were his students or assistants. This shows how much he helped spread new ideas. He lived a long life of learning and teaching. Born passed away in a hospital in Göttingen on 5 January 1970. His gravestone even has math symbols on it. These symbols represent the important work he did for science.
