Walter Brattain was a famous American physicist.

He spent his life studying how tiny particles move. He was born in China in 1902. His parents were Americans who lived there for work. His mother was a very gifted mathematician. Later, the family moved to Washington state. Brattain grew up on a cattle ranch. He studied physics and math at Whitman College. He later earned a Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota.

Brattain worked at Bell Telephone Laboratories for many years. He worked with two other smart scientists. Their names were John Bardeen and William Shockley. They wanted to find a better way to control electricity. At that time, people used vacuum tubes for this job. Vacuum tubes were not very reliable or efficient. The team wanted a new tool called a semiconductor amplifier. This would use materials like silicon or germanium to work.

Making the first transistor was a hard job.

The team had to figure out why their first ideas failed. Bardeen had great theories about how surfaces work. Brattain was a gifted experimenter who used his hands. He and Bardeen tried many different tests. They eventually pushed a small gold point into silicon. Later, they used germanium to make it work even better. They used two gold leaf contacts very close together. This created the first working point-contact transistor in 1947.

The transistor changed the whole world of technology. It can make small electrical signals much bigger. It also helps computers process digital information. This invention is the key to modern electronics.

Because of this, Bell Labs shared their discovery with everyone. They held a press conference in June 1948. They did not keep it a military secret. This allowed many other scientists to study it. It helped new technology grow very quickly everywhere.

In 1956, the three men won a Nobel Prize. This is a very prestigious award in physics. They were honored for discovering the transistor effect.

Brattain was very happy to receive this honor. He said he was lucky to work with the right people. Later in his life, he studied living things too. He looked at how blood clots and how cells work. He also taught many students at Whitman College. Brattain died in 1987 at the age of 85.
