Sir Chandrasekhara Venkata Raman was a brilliant physicist from India. He spent his life studying how light works.

Raman was a very gifted student from a young age. He finished his secondary school exams when he was only 11 years old. By age 16, he topped his university exams with honors in physics. He was a very curious person who loved to explore the world. His work helped us understand the secrets of light and sound.

One big discovery happened when light travels through clear materials. Raman and his student, K. S. Krishnan, used a special tool called a spectrograph. They found that light changes its wavelength when it moves through a transparent object. This means the light shifts in a way that was not known before. They called this modified scattering, but people now call it the Raman effect.

This effect happens because the light scatters in a new way. It allows scientists to see how molecules behave.

Raman's journey into science was full of hard work and big changes. He started as an accountant in the Indian Finance Service in Calcutta. He used his own free time to do research at a place called the IACS. This was the first research institute in India. In 1917, he became a professor at the University of Calcutta. He even left a high-paying job to become a teacher. He wanted to help science grow in his home country.

Many important dates and places mark his great career. He discovered the Raman effect on February 28, 1928. Because of this, India celebrates National Science Day on that date every year. In 1930, he won the Nobel Prize in Physics.

He was the first person from Asia to win this prize. Later, he moved to Bengaluru to lead the Indian Institute of Science. He also started the Raman Research Institute in 1948.

We can see Raman's influence in many parts of our world today. His work with light helps us study the tiny building blocks of matter. He also studied how musical instruments make sound through vibrations.

This shows how science connects to the things we see and hear. Just as he wondered why the sea looked blue, we can use his tools to explore. His life reminds us that curiosity can lead to amazing discoveries. Science is a path of constant wonder.
