In 1947, they made a big discovery. They invented the transistor. A transistor is a tiny part that controls electricity. It can make small signals much bigger. This tool is very important for modern electronics. 
Brattain was a great experimenter. He used his hands to test new ideas. He and Bardeen found a way to make the device work. They used a small gold point on a piece of germanium. Germanium is a type of semiconductor. A semiconductor is a material that can carry electricity in special ways.
In 1956, the three men won a Nobel Prize. This is a very special award for science. Brattain was happy to win it. He said he was glad to work with the right people. Later in life, he also studied how living cells work.

Walter Houser Brattain was a prominent American solid-state physicist. 
Brattain was born on February 10, 1902, in Amoy, China. His parents were Americans working in the country. His father taught at a private school for Chinese boys. His mother was a very skilled mathematician. The family moved to the United States in 1903. They eventually lived on a cattle ranch in Washington state. Brattain attended Whitman College for his undergraduate studies. He earned a degree in both Physics and Mathematics in 1924.
After college, Brattain pursued advanced studies in science. He earned an M.A. from the University of Oregon in 1926. He then received a Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota in 1929. At Minnesota, he studied quantum mechanics, which is the study of very tiny particles. He also worked at the National Bureau of Standards in Washington, D.C. In 1929, he joined Bell Telephone Laboratories as a research physicist. There, he studied how heat affects the flow of electrical charge.
Before the transistor, the telephone industry relied on vacuum tubes. These tubes controlled the flow of electrons and amplified electrical currents. However, vacuum tubes were not very efficient or reliable. Bell Labs wanted to find a better alternative using semiconductors. Semiconductors are materials that can conduct electricity under certain conditions. Brattain studied how light affects the surfaces of materials like silicon. This work on the photo-effect was a major contribution to his field. 
In 1945, Bell Labs created a special group for solid-state physics research. This group was led by William Shockley and included John Bardeen. 
Brattain and Bardeen eventually found a way to make amplification happen. They first pushed a gold metal point into silicon. They later found that using germanium worked even better. On December 16, 1947, Brattain developed a method using two gold leaf contacts. These contacts were placed very close together on a germanium surface. This created the point-contact transistor. 

The transistor is a key enabler of all modern electronics. It can amplify small electrical signals and process digital information. Because the discovery was so important, Bell Labs held a press conference in 1948. They chose to share their knowledge freely with the world. This allowed many different companies to develop new technologies. In 1956, Brattain, Bardeen, and Shockley won the Nobel Prize in Physics. This award recognized their discovery of the transistor effect. 
Later in his life, Brattain explored new scientific connections. He studied how electrochemical processes work in living things. He became interested in how blood clots after his son had heart surgery. He also studied how living cells absorb things using phospholipid bilayers. Brattain also spent many years teaching at Whitman College. He continued to work as a consultant even after he retired. He died of Alzheimer's disease on October 13, 1987. He was 85 years old.
