Wave function

physical science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

A wave function is a math tool used in quantum physics. It describes the quantum state of an isolated system. Scientists often use the Greek letters psi to represent it. This tool is important because it helps us understand tiny things. In the quantum world, particles do not act like little balls. Instead, they have properties that act like waves. This idea is called wave-particle duality.

How does this math tool work? It assigns a complex number to every point in space. This might sound strange, but these numbers help us find probabilities. We use a rule called the Born rule to do this. The rule says that if you square the wave function, you get the probability density. This shows the chance of finding a particle at a specific place. A larger part of the wave means a higher chance of finding the particle there.

Many smart people helped build this idea over many years. In 1900, Max Planck found a link between light and energy. Later, in 1923, Louis de Broglie suggested that big particles also act like waves. In 1926, Erwin Schrödinger published his famous wave equation. This equation tells us how a wave function changes over time. He used math called wave mechanics to explain these movements.

Scientists used different math methods to study these waves. Werner Heisenberg and Max Born used a method called matrix mechanics. Schrödinger showed that his wave mechanics and their matrix mechanics were actually the same. In 1927, Max Born gave us the idea of probability amplitude. This helped connect math to what scientists see in real experiments. Other scientists like Paul Dirac later found equations for particles moving very fast.

You can think of a wave function like a map of possibilities. A regular map shows you exactly where a road is. A quantum map only shows where a road might be. It is a bit like a wave in the ocean. An ocean wave spreads out over a large area of water. A quantum particle also spreads out, but it stays a single particle. This makes the quantum world very different from our everyday world.
