Wave function

physical science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

In the tiny world of quantum physics, things work in a strange way. Small parts like electrons act like waves. Scientists use a math tool to describe them. We call this a wave function.

A wave function tells us about the state of a tiny system. It does not show exactly where a particle is. Instead, it shows where a particle might be. We use a rule called the Born rule to find this out. This rule says that the size of the wave shows the chance of finding a particle in a certain spot. A large part of the wave means the particle is likely there.

Scientists use the Schrödinger equation to see how these waves change over time. This equation works like other wave equations. For example, it works like waves on a string.

Different particles have different types of waves. Some particles have a property called spin. This means their wave function must include extra information. Many scientists worked to find these math rules. Erwin Schrödinger and Max Born were two of them. They helped us understand how waves and particles are linked.
