Quantum

physical science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

In physics, a quantum is a tiny bit of something. It is the smallest amount possible. Think of it like a single packet.

This idea is called quantization. It means things can only have certain values. They cannot be any size. They must be whole amounts of a quantum. For example, a photon is a single quantum of light.

Energy in an atom is also quantized. This means it exists in certain levels. This helps atoms stay stable.

Max Planck helped find this idea. He was a German physicist. In 1900, he shared his work. He showed how energy moves in packets. Later, he found a number called the Planck constant. This constant is known as h. Planck won a Nobel Prize in 1918.

Albert Einstein also helped. In 1905, he said light moves in packets. He called these quanta of light. This helped explain how light and power work together. These ideas help us describe nature.
