Quantum

physical science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

A quantum is a very small thing. It is the smallest amount of any physical property. This property can be involved in an interaction. Scientists call this idea quantization. It means a property can only have certain values. These values must be whole multiples of one quantum.

Think about how this works in nature. A photon is a single quantum of light. This light has a specific frequency. Energy in an atom is also quantized. This means an electron can only exist at certain levels. Electrons cannot be at any energy level they want. This rule keeps atoms and matter stable.

Max Planck helped discover these ideas. He was a German physicist. On December 14, 1900, he shared his findings. He spoke to the German Physical Society. He used this to solve a problem about blackbody radiation. In 1906, he introduced the constant h. This is now called the Planck constant.

Planck did many important things in science. He found values for the elementary charge. He also found the Avogadro–Loschmidt number. This number counts molecules in one mole of a substance. He won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1918. Later, Albert Einstein helped too. In 1905, he suggested light exists in packets. He called these quanta of light.

These ideas help us understand the whole world. Quantization is a foundation for quantum mechanics. This is the study of how tiny things work. It also helps us understand quantum electrodynamics. This describes how energy and matter interact. It is a way to describe nature. These small packets make up our big world.
