Planck postulate

physical science Maturity 9-11 Next article →

The Planck postulate is a big rule in science. It is a main part of quantum mechanics. This field studies how the tiny world works. The rule says that energy moves in small steps. Scientists call this idea quantization. Energy does not flow in a smooth way. Instead, it comes in fixed amounts. This rule helps us understand how light and heat work.

To understand this, think about an oscillator. An oscillator is something that moves back and forth. In a black body, these oscillators have energy. The Planck postulate says this energy is quantized. This means the energy is always a certain amount. You can find the energy with a math formula. You multiply a special number by the frequency. This number is called the Planck constant. The formula uses a Greek letter named nu.

Max Planck first shared this idea in 1900. He was trying to solve a problem. He wanted to explain black body radiation. This is how objects give off light and heat. Planck found a formula for the whole spectrum. The spectrum is the range of light sent out. Planck did not think this was a physical truth. He thought it was just a math trick. He called these things virtual oscillators.

Other smart people used this rule later. In 1905, Albert Einstein used the postulate. He used it to explain the photoelectric effect. Einstein had a new idea about light. He said light itself is made of tiny bits. These bits are called photons. The energy of a photon is also quantized. Later, Niels Bohr used the rule for atoms. He used it to study the hydrogen atom. This helped him find the Rydberg constant.

This rule changed how we see the world. It helped explain the Compton effect too. Before this, scientists used classical physics. Classical physics could not explain these tiny things. Now, we know quantization is a real part of nature. It is not just a math trick like Planck thought. It is a way the universe truly works. We use these ideas to study the smallest parts of everything.
