Max Planck was a famous German physicist who changed how we see the world.

He is known as one of the founders of modern physics. His work helped us understand the tiny processes inside atoms. This new way of thinking is called quantum theory. Before his work, many scientists thought physics was almost finished. They believed they understood most of how nature worked. Planck showed that there was still much more to discover about energy.

Planck focused on how heat and energy move. This field of study is called thermodynamics. He spent many years studying a concept called entropy. Entropy is a way to measure how heat moves in a system. Planck studied how entropy relates to whether a process can go backward. He found that entropy can be created, but it can never be destroyed.

This helped scientists understand how energy reaches a state of balance. He also studied how electricity moves through liquids in solutions.

Max Planck was born on April 23, 1858, in Kiel, Germany.

He grew up in a family of very smart people. His father was a professor of law. His grandfathers were both professors of theology. Max was a gifted musician who played the piano and the cello. He even composed his own songs and operas. He was a very talented student who graduated from school at age 17. He later studied at the University of Munich and the University of Berlin.

His most important discovery was about energy quanta. A quantum is a tiny, discrete bit of energy.

He used this idea to find the Planck constant. This constant is a very important number in quantum physics. Because of his discovery, he won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1918. He also helped start the German Physical Society in 1898. He served as its president from 1905 to 1909. Planck lived until October 4, 1947.

Today, many people still study the ideas that Planck started. His work is like a foundation for a house. Just as a house needs a strong base, modern science needs his rules. His name is even on a famous group of research centers. The Max Planck Society was named in his honor in 1948. This group includes 83 different places where scientists work today.
