Max Karl Ernst Ludwig Planck was a German theoretical physicist who fundamentally changed our understanding of the universe.

He is recognized as one of the primary founders of modern physics. His work provided the necessary groundwork for quantum theory, which describes how atomic and subatomic processes function. By discovering energy quanta, Planck moved science beyond the classical views of the 19th century. This discovery was so significant that he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1918.

His legacy continues through the Max Planck Society, which supports 83 scientific institutions today.

Planck's scientific journey began with a deep focus on thermodynamics, the study of heat and energy. In his early career, he investigated the concept of entropy. Entropy is a measure used to describe the state of a physical system and the irreversibility of its processes. Planck studied how entropy relates to equilibrium, which is the state where a system reaches a balance. He argued that entropy can be created during a process, but it can never be destroyed.

This work helped clarify how energy moves from warmer bodies to colder ones.

Beyond thermodynamics, Planck made vital contributions to the study of electrical processes in solutions. He worked to derive the relationship between the conductivity of a solution and its dilution. This research was part of his early decade of scientific work. He also explored the coexistence of different aggregate states and the equilibrium of gas reactions. While other scientists like Josiah Willard Gibbs were working on similar topics, Planck's approach focused on irreversible processes. This gave his work a sense of universality that was highly valued in the scientific community.

Planck's most revolutionary work involved the discovery of energy quanta. A quantum is a discrete, tiny unit of energy. Before Planck, many physicists believed that energy moved in continuous, smooth flows. Planck showed that energy is actually released or absorbed in these specific, individual packets. To describe this, he identified the Planck constant, denoted as *h*. This constant is a fundamental value in quantum physics. He also developed the Planck relation, which states that the energy of a photon is proportional to its frequency.

This discovery allowed scientists to use Planck units, which are expressed through physical constants.

Born on April 23, 1858, in Kiel, Germany, Planck came from a highly intellectual family. His father was a law professor, and his grandfathers were theology professors.

Planck was a gifted musician who possessed absolute pitch. He played the piano, organ, and cello, and even composed operas. He showed early mathematical talent under the guidance of Hermann Müller. Müller was the person who first introduced Planck to the law of conservation of energy. This encounter sparked Planck's lifelong interest in the field of physics.

Planck's academic career was marked by prestigious positions and leadership roles. He studied at the University of Munich and the University of Berlin. In 1889, he succeeded Gustav Kirchhoff at the University of Berlin. He eventually became a Full Professor there in 1892. Planck was also a leader in the scientific community. He helped merge various local groups to form the German Physical Society in 1898. He served as the president of this society from 1905 to 1909.

He was known as an exceptional lecturer who could teach complex topics without using notes.

His influence on the next generation of scientists was profound. Although he did not establish a large formal school, he mentored several important physicists. His graduate students included figures such as Max von Laue and Walther Bothe. These individuals went on to make their own significant contributions to science. Planck's transition from studying heat to discovering the quantum marked a shift in human knowledge. He bridged the gap between the classical physics of the past and the quantum mechanics of the future.
