Planck constant

physical science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

The Planck constant is a very important number in science. It is a fundamental constant used in quantum mechanics. This is the study of how the smallest parts of our world work. This constant helps us understand how light carries energy. It also shows how tiny particles move. Scientists use it to link the energy of a photon to its frequency. A photon is a tiny packet of light.

This constant works like a bridge between different ideas. One way it works is by connecting energy to frequency. If you know the frequency of light, you can find its energy using this constant. Another way is by connecting momentum to a matter wave. Momentum is a measure of how much a particle is moving. The constant links this to the wavenumber of the wave. This wavenumber is just the reciprocal of the wavelength.

Max Planck discovered this constant in the year 1900. He was trying to explain how hot objects give off light. This is called black-body radiation. Before his discovery, scientists had rules that did not work perfectly. Some rules worked for short wavelengths but failed for long ones. Planck created a new mathematical expression called Planck's law. He even called the constant the "quantum of action."

Many famous scientists helped build our knowledge of this constant. Albert Einstein used it in 1905 to explain the photoelectric effect. This effect happens when light hits a surface and knocks electrons loose. Einstein showed that light travels in small packets called quanta. Later, Niels Bohr used the constant to describe atoms.

His model showed electrons moving at specific energy levels. Max Planck even won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1918 for this work.

Today, the Planck constant is used in many ways. It is used in metrology, which is the science of measurement. It helps scientists define the kilogram. The kilogram is the standard unit used to measure mass. The constant also appears in the uncertainty principle. This principle says we cannot know everything about a particle at once. If we measure position very well, momentum becomes hard to know. This shows how deep and strange the tiny world can be.
