physical science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Max Planck found a special rule in the year 1900.

This rule is called the Planck constant. It helps us understand how light and tiny bits of matter work.

Before this, scientists did not know why heat gave off light in certain ways. Planck studied how hot objects glow.

He found that energy does not flow in a smooth stream. Instead, energy comes in tiny packets. These packets are called quanta.

Albert Einstein used this idea to explain the photoelectric effect. This is when light hits a surface and knocks tiny parts called electrons loose. Einstein showed that the energy of these packets depends on the frequency of the light. Frequency is how fast a wave vibrates.

This constant is very important for science. It helps define the kilogram, which is a unit used to measure mass. It also helps us understand atoms.

Bohr atom model

In the Bohr model, electrons move around the center of an atom at certain energy levels. The Planck constant helps explain how they do this. Even the tiny waves of matter follow this rule.
