Quantum state

physical science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

In the tiny world of quantum physics, scientists use math to describe how things act. This mathematical description is called a quantum state. A quantum state is very important because it contains all the information we can possibly know about a system. There are two main kinds of these states. A pure state is a single, clear state that can be shown as a vector. A mixed state is a statistical mixture of many different pure states.

To understand how this works, think about a cannonball in our everyday world. This is a classical state. If you know the cannonball's position and its speed, you can predict its path. You can use math to see exactly where it will land. Quantum states work differently because they use complex numbers. Instead of exact facts, they give us a probability distribution. This is a way to show the chances of different results happening.

Scientists use different ways to write these states down. These different ways are called representations. One common way is using a wave function. This describes things like where a particle is or how fast it moves. Another way uses a density matrix to show mixed states. Choosing one representation can make a math problem easier to solve. It is a bit like using different maps to find the same place.

Measuring a quantum system is a very special event. When you measure a state, you might actually change it. This happens because some measurements are incompatible. For example, measuring a particle's momentum might change its position. This is known as the uncertainty principle. Because of this, measurements help "prepare" the system for the next step. It is hard to know everything about a particle at the exact same time.

Quantum states also help us understand how particles connect. One example is the singlet state. This is a special kind of state that shows entanglement. In this state, two particles are linked together. If you measure the spin of one particle, you know something about the other. One might be "up" while the other is "down." This happens with equal probability for both directions. These rules show how the tiny world is full of surprises.
