Gustav Ludwig Hertz was a famous German physicist. He was born in Hamburg in 1887. He loved to study how the world works. He and his friend James Franck did a big test. They watched how tiny electrons hit atoms. This discovery won them the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1925.

During his life, Hertz held many jobs. He worked at a lamp factory. He also led science groups at big schools. He worked on ways to separate isotopes. Isotopes are different types of the same atom.

Life was not always easy for him. Because of his family history, he had to leave his job in 1934. Later, he moved to the Soviet Union. He led a large group of workers there. They studied gas and atoms.

Hertz won many more awards later on. He won the Stalin Prize in 1951. He also won the Max Planck Medal. His two sons grew up to be physicists too. He died in Berlin in 1975 at age 88.
