Otto Stern was a famous scientist who studied the tiny parts of our world. He was a German-American physical chemist. This means he studied how matter and energy work together. He was very well known in the science world. In fact, he was the second most nominated person for a Nobel Prize. He received 82 nominations between 1925 and 1945. The Nobel Prize is a very special award for people who make big discoveries. Stern eventually won the Nobel Prize in Physics.

Stern used special tools to see things that are too small to touch. He worked on the molecular beam method. This is a way to study atoms and molecules by sending them in a beam. He also worked with Immanuel Estermann to show the wave nature of atoms. One of his most famous discoveries involved the proton. He found the magnetic moment of the proton. This tells us about the magnetic power of that tiny part of an atom. He also did the Stern-Gerlach experiment with Walther Gerlach in 1922. This experiment helped scientists learn about spin quantization.

Stern's life took him to many different places. He was born on 17 February 1888 in Sohrau. This place is now called Żory. He grew up in the Province of Silesia in the Kingdom of Prussia. As a student, he went to universities in Freiburg im Breisgau, Munich, and Breslau. He finished his studies at the University of Breslau in 1912. After that, he followed Albert Einstein to Prague. He also studied at ETH Zurich.

His career changed because of big events in history. In 1921, he was a professor at the University of Rostock. Later, he became the director at the University of Hamburg. In 1933, he had to leave his job in Germany because of the Nazis' seizure of power. He moved to the United States to find safety. He became a professor at the Carnegie Institute of Technology in Pittsburgh. He later moved to Berkeley, California. He was a frequent visitor to the university there.

We still remember Stern's work today. The 1943 Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded to him. It was actually given out in 1944. Scientists even named a special award after him. It is called the Stern-Gerlach-Medaille. This award is for excellence in experimental physics. His work with molecular beams is still used in a technique called molecular beam epitaxy. Stern died of a heart attack on 17 August 1969. He lived a long life of discovery.
