Ernst Mach was a famous scientist from Austria.

He was both a physicist and a philosopher. A physicist studies how things like light and sound move. A philosopher thinks about how we know what is true. Mach was very interested in how we use our senses to see the world. He believed that our knowledge comes from what we can sense. This way of thinking is called empirio-criticism.

Mach is most famous for his work with shock waves. A shock wave is a sudden change in air pressure. This happens when an object moves faster than the speed of sound.

When a bullet flies very fast, it pushes the air in front of it. This creates a cone-shaped wave. Mach and his son Ludwig used special photography to see these invisible waves. They used a method called schlieren photography to capture shadows of the waves. Today, we use the Mach number to compare an object's speed to the speed of sound.

Mach was born in 1838 in a place called Moravia.

His father was a tutor, and his grandfather was a master builder. Mach studied at the University of Vienna. He earned his doctorate in physics in 1860. He later became a professor of mathematics and physics. He spent many years teaching at Charles-Ferdinand University. He lived a long life and died in 1916 at the age of 78.

Mach also studied how the human body works.

He discovered how the inner ear helps people keep their balance. He found that fluid moves in small tubes in the ear to send signals to the brain. To test his ideas about motion, he even built a special spinning chair. He also studied how our eyes see edges. This led to the discovery of Mach bands, which are visual illusions. He was a very busy researcher who studied many different things.

Many great thinkers were influenced by Mach's ideas.

Albert Einstein used Mach's work to help create his theory of relativity. Einstein said that Mach's ideas helped him find his own solutions. Mach also had ideas about how everything in the universe is connected. This is known as the Mach principle. It suggests that the movement of stars might affect how objects move here on Earth. His work changed how we think about space, time, and science itself.
