He studied how the world works. He was a physicist and a philosopher. A physicist studies how matter and energy move. A philosopher thinks about big ideas and knowledge.

Mach is well known for his work with shock waves. A shock wave is a sudden change in air pressure. This happens when an object moves faster than sound.

Mach used special photography to see these invisible waves. He even photographed waves made by bullets. Today, we use the Mach number to measure speed. This number compares how fast an object moves to the speed of sound.

Mach also studied the human body. He found how our inner ear helps us stay steady. He used a special swivel chair to test his ideas.

This helped him learn about our sense of balance.

His ideas helped other great thinkers. Albert Einstein used Mach's work to help build his own theories.
