Heinrich Hertz was a German physicist.

He lived from 1857 to 1894. He is famous for proving that electromagnetic waves exist. These waves were first predicted by James Clerk Maxwell. Maxwell thought electric and magnetic fields could travel through space. Hertz used a special tool to prove this.

His tool was a dipole antenna. This used two wires with a small gap between them. When high voltage hit the wires, it made a spark. This spark sent out waves. Hertz used a second tool to catch these waves. He saw a spark in the second tool too. These were the first radio waves ever seen. He also found the photoelectric effect. This happens when light helps move tiny bits of charge. He noticed this when using ultraviolet radiation.

Hertz did not think his work was useful for everyday life. But his work helped people make radios later. He also studied how solid objects touch each other. This is called contact mechanics. His ideas still help scientists today.
