He was a biologist and a physician born in 1868. He spent his life studying how the body protects itself. This field is called immunology. His work helped people live much longer lives. Today, many people call him the father of transfusion medicine.

This is because he figured out how to move blood safely between people.

In 1901, Landsteiner discovered that human blood comes in different groups. He found three main types: A, B, and O. He noticed that blood from two people might clump together. This clumping happens when blood touches blood serum. If the blood types do not match, the body's immune system may attack the new blood. Landsteiner showed that transfusions are safe if the groups are the same.

Later, in 1937, he and Alexander S. Wiener found the Rhesus factor. This discovery made giving blood even safer for patients.

Landsteiner's journey as a scientist took him across many countries. He studied medicine at the University of Vienna. He also studied chemistry in Würzburg, München, and Zürich. After World War I, the economy in Austria was very difficult. He moved to the Netherlands to find work at a hospital. Eventually, he moved to New York in 1923. He worked at the Rockefeller Institute for the rest of his career.

He lived a busy life of constant discovery.

There are many important facts about his amazing career. In 1909, he helped find the polio virus. This discovery helped scientists fight the disease known as polio. In 1930, he won the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. He also received the Aronson Prize in 1926. In 1946, he was given the Lasker Award after he died. Even today, we celebrate his birthday as World Blood Donor Day. His work helped create the rules for blood donations used every day.

We see Landsteiner's work every time someone gives blood at a hospital.

He discovered that some people are universal donors. People with O-negative blood can give to almost anyone. He also found that people with AB blood are universal recipients. This means they can accept many different types of blood. These rules exist because of the antigens Landsteiner first identified. His science makes modern medicine a safe and reliable tool for everyone.
