Ray Birdwhistell was a man who studied this. He started this field in 1952. He was an anthropologist, which is a person who studies people. He thought all body moves have meaning. He believed these moves have a grammar. This is like the rules for spoken words. He even used the word kineme. A kineme is a group of moves. These moves can change but keep the same meaning.

Words are only part of a talk. Birdwhistell thought words carry only a small part of meaning. Most of the meaning comes from the body. There are many types of moves. Some are called emblems. These moves act like a word or a phrase. Others are called illustrators. They help or back up what you say. You can also use moves to show feelings. These are called affect displays.
