Early Cossacks were often free men. They lived near big rivers like the Don and the Dnieper. They were great horse riders. They used these skills to protect their lands. They defended their homes from raids. In return, leaders gave them special rights. This allowed them to rule themselves in many ways. Some groups were foot soldiers. They used war wagons to move. Other groups were cavalry. This means they fought on horseback.

Life changed a lot for them later. The Russian Revolution brought big shifts. Many Cossacks moved to other parts of Europe. Later, the Soviet Union stopped many of their old ways. But in the late 1980s, things began to change again. People started to bring back their old traditions. Today, millions of people feel a link to Cossack culture. They live in many places like Canada and the United States.
