The Cossacks are a predominantly East Slavic, Eastern Orthodox Christian people.

They originated in the Pontic–Caspian steppe regions. These areas include eastern Ukraine and southern Russia. Historically, they functioned as a semi-nomadic and semi-militarized society. This means they moved frequently and maintained a constant readiness for combat. They lived in the river basins of the Dnieper, Don, Terek, and Ural.

Their role was vital for defending southern borders against Crimean–Nogai raids. They also helped develop the steppe regions near the Black Sea and Azov Sea.

Cossack society was organized through a specific military structure. They formed large, autonomous groups known as hosts. Each host was responsible for protecting a specific territory. These territories contained affiliated villages called stanitsas.

Different hosts utilized different combat styles and technologies. The Zaporozhian Cossacks were mostly infantry soldiers. They famously used war wagons for protection and movement. In contrast, the Don Cossacks were primarily cavalry soldiers. They relied heavily on mounted horsemanship and cavalry battle tactics. This dependence on horses was a central pillar of the Cossack way of life.

The origins of the Cossacks remain a subject of intense historical debate.

The name likely comes from the Tatar Turkic word *qazaq*. This word meant both "free man" and "conqueror." Some scholars suggest the first Cossacks were of Turkic stock. Others argue they were Slavic peasants fleeing to the frontier.

Genetic studies show the Y-chromosomal makeup of many groups is predominantly East Slavic. However, some groups like the Terek Cossacks show more North Circassian influence. By the 15th century, people moved into the "Wild Fields" for fertile land and livestock. These early settlers inherited lifestyles from previous groups like the Cumans.

By the 16th century, the Cossacks had become a distinct social class. They moved from being individual mercenaries to organized territorial entities. The Zaporozhian Host operated with significant autonomy. They even signed a treaty with Poland in 1649 to recognize their status.

Meanwhile, the Don Cossack State established its own centers of power. Its capital moved from Razdory to Cherkassk and finally to Novocherkassk. These groups often acted as independent border guards. They served various powers, including the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth and the Russian Empire. In exchange for military service, rulers granted them special privileges.

The 20th century brought massive disruption to Cossack society. The Russian Revolution caused sweeping societal changes that affected everyone in Russia. Many Cossacks chose to migrate to different parts of Europe to escape the new political order.

During World War II, the complexity of their allegiance was visible. Cohesive Cossack-based cavalry units fought for both Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union. After the war, the Soviet Union disbanded these units within the army. Under the rule of Joseph Stalin and his successors, many traditions were suppressed. This era marked a period of significant cultural loss for the people.

A period of revival began during the Perestroika era in the late 1980s.

In 1988, the Soviet Union passed a law allowing the re-establishment of former hosts. This allowed for the formation of new Cossack groups. Throughout the 1990s, regional authorities began delegating administrative and policing duties to these reconstituted hosts. This helped bring many historic traditions back into public life. Today, the Cossack identity is a global phenomenon. It is no longer tied strictly to a single territory or way of life.

Today, between 3.5 and 5 million people identify with the Cossack cultural identity.

This number includes many people who have no direct connection to the original historical groups. Instead, they are drawn to the acquired ideals and legacy of the culture. Cossack organizations are active in many different nations. These include Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Canada, and the United States. Their history connects to broader themes of migration, military evolution, and cultural survival. The Cossack legacy continues to influence the cultural development of both Ukraine and Russia.
