They live in the Balkan Peninsula and the eastern Alps. Today, this group includes many people. They are Bosniaks, Bulgarians, Croats, Macedonians, Montenegrins, Serbs, and Slovenes.

Long ago, the Slavs moved into these lands. They arrived in the Balkans during the 6th and 7th centuries. Early writers said they were strong and lived in small huts. They did not have one single leader. They often moved from place to place.

In the 9th century, two brothers named Cyril and Methodius helped the people. They were monks from Thessaloniki. They made a new way to write. They called this the Glagolitic script. This helped people write down religious books.

Later, many South Slavs wanted to be one nation. They formed a country called Yugoslavia. This name means "South Slavdom." Most South Slavic groups joined this state. However, Bulgaria did not join Yugoslavia. In the 1990s, Yugoslavia broke apart. Now, several new and independent countries live there.
