The Old Prussians were a group of Baltic people. They lived on the southeastern shore of the Baltic Sea. Their land sat between the Vistula Lagoon and the Curonian Lagoon. This region included parts of modern Poland, Russia, and Lithuania. The area was filled with many lakes, streams, and swamps.

The people spoke a Baltic language. They also followed their own religious beliefs before Christianity arrived. They did not call themselves "Prussians." That name was actually given to them by others later on. Some think the name came from words for water or lakes.

Life for the Old Prussians was organized into small groups. The smallest unit was called a laūks. A laūks was a small settlement of families. These families shared fields and worked together for safety. They lived near strongholds or hill forts. Larger groups called a pulka could hold up to 2,000 people. These groups were made of about twelve laūkses.

Adult men held meetings to discuss important community matters. They elected leaders to help run things. A chief was in charge of building roads and watching borders. The head of a house was called a buttataws.

Because they lived in many small tribes, they were not one single nation. Each tribe had its own name based on where they lived. For example, the Bartians and the Sambians were different tribes. Other groups included the Galindians and the Nadruvians. There were eleven lands and ten tribes listed in an old book from 1326.

This lack of unity made them weaker against outside groups. They did not have a common name to bring them together. This made it harder for them to defend their lands.

Old Prussian culture had many unique traditions. They were known for being very strong and brave. They often celebrated by drinking mead, which is a honey drink.

They also believed that spirits lived in all parts of nature. They honored their ancestors and believed in a soul. Some people thought they had a specific group of gods. They even made stone statues called babas. These stone figures were made between the 8th and 13th centuries.

History changed greatly for the Old Prussians over time. In the 10th century, leaders from the Polans tried to conquer them. These attempts to change their religion did not work at first. Later, in the 13th century, the Teutonic Order conquered their lands. Over the next two hundred years, the Old Prussians began to blend in with others. By the 18th century, their original language was mostly gone.
