Old Church Slavonic (OCS) is the earliest recorded literary language of the Slavic people.

It belongs to the South Slavic subgroup within the Indo-European language family. This language serves a vital role as a liturgical language in many Christian Orthodox churches today. Because it is the oldest attested Slavic language, it provides essential evidence for Proto-Slavic. Proto-Slavic is the reconstructed common ancestor of all modern Slavic languages.

By studying OCS, linguists can better understand how the entire Slavic language family originally functioned.

The creation of this language involved a complex process of standardization and translation. In the 9th century, Byzantine missionaries Saints Cyril and Methodius undertook this massive task. They aimed to support the Christianization of the Slavs by providing religious texts in a language they could understand. To achieve this, they developed the Glagolitic alphabet, a unique writing system. They then translated essential liturgical books, including the Gospels, the Psalter, and the Acts of the Apostles.

The missionaries based the language primarily on the Slavic dialect spoken near Thessaloniki. This region is located in present-day Greece.

History shows that the language moved through several distinct geographic and political stages. The mission began around 862 or 863 in response to a request from Duke Rastislav. He ruled Great Moravia, which covers parts of the modern Czech Republic and Slovakia.

During this period, OCS was used for government and religious documents at the Great Moravian Academy. However, in 885, Pope Stephen V prohibited its use in Great Moravia, favoring Latin instead. Following the expulsion of the missionaries in 886, their students carried the Glagolitic alphabet to the Bulgarian Empire.

In the Bulgarian Empire, the language underwent further development and script changes. King Boris I officially accepted the missionaries and established important centers of learning. He founded the Preslav Literary School and the Ohrid Literary School.

While both schools initially used Glagolitic, a new script called Cyrillic emerged at the Preslav school. By the year 893, Cyrillic became the official script in Bulgaria, replacing Glagolitic. This transition helped the language spread more effectively across other Slavic territories.

As the language spread, it eventually branched into various regional forms. By the middle of the 11th century, Old Church Slavonic had diversified into several regional varieties known as recensions.

These local versions are collectively referred to as the Church Slavonic language. The language reached many areas, including Croatia, Serbia, Bohemia, Lesser Poland, and the principalities of the Kievan Rus'. Each region adapted the language to include features of their local Slavic vernaculars. This process allowed the liturgical tradition to remain deeply connected to local cultures.

There is significant scholarly discussion regarding the exact names and origins of the language. In modern English studies, the terms Old Church Slavonic and Old Church Slavic are most commonly accepted. However, different nations have different perspectives on its heritage. Bulgarian writers often use the term Old Bulgarian, noting similarities to modern Bulgarian.

Macedonian scholars have also used the term Old Macedonian, as the language was based on dialects from the Thessaloniki region. These debates highlight how deeply the language is woven into the national identities of many Slavic peoples.

Today, Old Church Slavonic remains a bridge between the ancient past and modern linguistic structures. It continues to be used as a liturgical language in the Romanian Orthodox Church and other Eastern traditions.

The influence of the original compilers is even seen in modern names. The term for the language in the original texts was simply "Slavic," derived from the word for the people themselves. This root is still preserved in the names for the Slovak and Slovene languages. Through its history, OCS has shaped the way many cultures express their faith and their history.
