Gottfried Reinhold Treviranus was a man who studied life. He lived in a place called Bremen. He was a doctor and a naturalist. A naturalist is a person who studies nature.

Gottfried studied at the University of Göttingen. He earned his doctor's degree in 1796. Later, he became a professor. He taught medicine and math.

Gottfried had a big idea about life. He believed in the transmutation of species. This means he thought living things could change over time. He wrote about this in 1802. This was long before Charles Darwin. His brother Ludolph was also a scientist. Ludolph studied plants and animals.

Gottfried used a microscope to see very small things. In the 1830s, he found special parts in the eye. These are called rod photoreceptor cells. These cells are in the retina. The retina is the part of the eye that helps us see. He wrote many books to share what he learned. His work helped people understand how life works.
