Lamarck studied many different living things. He was an expert on invertebrates. These are animals without backbones, like worms or snails. He even helped name these groups. He was also one of the first to use the word biology. This word describes the study of life.

Lamarck had big ideas about how life changes. He believed that living things change over time. He thought the environment helps cause these changes. He said that using certain body parts helps them change. This idea is called Lamarckism.
