Jean-Baptiste Lamarck was a famous French scientist who changed how we look at life.

He was born in 1744 in a place called Picardy. Before he became a researcher, he was a brave soldier. He fought in the Seven Years' War against Prussia. During a hard battle, his small group of men had no leaders left. Even though he was only 17, he took command. His courage earned him a promotion to an officer.

Lamarck eventually moved from the army to the world of science. He first studied medicine for four years. Later, he focused on botany, which is the study of plants. He spent ten years studying French plants under a teacher named Bernard de Jussieu. In 1779, he joined the French Academy of Sciences. He also worked at the Jardin des Plantes. He even helped change its name during the French Revolution.

Lamarck had many big ideas about how the natural world works. He was a master of invertebrate zoology. Invertebrates are animals that do not have backbones, like snails or worms. He was the first to separate arachnids from insects. He also helped name these different groups. In 1802, he was one of the first people to use the word "biology." This word describes the study of all living things.

He is most famous for his ideas about how species change. This idea is often called Lamarckism. He believed two main things happen to living things. First, a force drives life to become more complex over time. Second, the environment causes changes through use and disuse. He thought that if an animal uses a body part often, it might change. He thought these changes could be passed down to its children.

Many people debated his ideas during his life. A famous scientist named Georges Cuvier did not agree with him. Lamarck's theory was different from the ideas later shared by Charles Darwin. Even though some of his specific ideas were proven wrong, he was still very important. He was the first to create a complete theory of biological evolution. He helped scientists begin to understand the long history of life on Earth.
