It looks at how sounds work together in a language. This includes spoken words and sign languages. In sign languages, people use hand shapes and movement. These parts work like sounds in speech.

One important part of this study is the phoneme. A phoneme is a single unit of sound. Small changes to a sound can change a word's meaning. For example, in English, the "p" in "pot" has a puff of air. The "p" in "spot" does not. Most English speakers hear these as the same sound. But in languages like Thai, these sounds are different. They can make two words mean different things.

People have studied these patterns for a long time. A man named Panini wrote about Sanskrit sounds long ago. In the 1800s, Jan Baudouin de Courtenay helped shape modern study. Later, Nikolai Trubetzkoy wrote famous books on the subject.
