Many influential schools and thinkers shaped the field later. The Prague school was very important during the interwar period. Prince Nikolai Trubetzkoy was a leader of this school. He published *Grundzüge der Phonologie* in 1939. This work is a foundation for morphophonology. In 1968, Noam Chomsky and Morris Halle published *The Sound Pattern of English*. This book created the basis for generative phonology. They proposed that phonological representations consist of segments. These segments are made of distinctive features with binary values, such as + or −.

Other theories offer different ways to view linguistic structure. Natural phonology, proposed by David Stampe, suggests universal processes. These processes act on distinctive features within prosodic groups. John Goldsmith introduced autosegmental phonology in 1976. This theory views phonology as parallel sequences on multiple tiers. In the 1980s, government phonology attempted to unify syntactic and phonological structures. Finally, Alan Prince and Paul Smolensky developed optimality theory in 1991. This theory suggests languages choose pronunciations based on a hierarchy of constraints.

Phonology connects to many other scientific disciplines. Psycholinguistics studies how the brain processes these sound systems. Laboratory phonology uses physical data to test linguistic theories. Some researchers even look at the evolutionary aspects of sound patterns. This is known as evolutionary phonology. Whether studying spoken words or the movements of sign language, phonology reveals the hidden rules of human communication. It shows how we turn simple sounds into complex meanings.
