An anthropologist is a person who studies human cultures. He wanted to find the deep meaning in how people live. He spent many years doing fieldwork. This means he lived with people to learn their ways.

He lived in Java, Indonesia, for two and a half years. Later, he studied life in Morocco. He looked at things like mosques and local markets.

Geertz is known for a way of writing called thick description. This means writing down as much detail as possible. He did not just say what people did. He explained why they did it. For example, he wrote about bird fights in Bali. He wanted to show how these events held special meaning for the people.
