Clifford Geertz was a very famous American anthropologist.

An anthropologist is a scientist who studies human cultures. Geertz believed that culture is like a web of meaning. People spin these webs through the symbols they use every day. These symbols help people share knowledge and attitudes about life. He wanted to understand the deep meaning behind human actions. His work helped many people see how symbols give order to the world.

Geertz used a special method called thick description. This is not just a simple list of actions. Instead, it is a way of explaining the reasons behind what people do. A researcher must look at many small details to see the whole picture. For example, he wrote about the Balinese cockfight in Bali. He did not just describe the birds fighting. He explained what the event meant to the people watching. This helped others understand the deep social importance of the ritual.

His journey as a researcher began many years ago. Geertz was born in San Francisco on August 23, 1926. He served in the US Navy during World War II. Later, he studied at Antioch College and Harvard University. In 1952, he began his first long-term fieldwork in Java, Indonesia. He lived with a railroad laborer's family for two and a half years. He also traveled to Bali and Sumatra to learn more.

He wrote many important books during his life. One famous book is titled The Interpretation of Cultures, published in 1973. He also studied life in Morocco, looking at mosques and local markets. He received many honors and honorary doctorates from places like Cambridge and Chicago.

His ideas changed how many people study the world today. Many scholars in history and politics use his methods. He showed that we can use language and philosophy to understand society. He believed that culture is something everyone shares in public. This helps us connect with the lives of people from different places. Geertz died on October 30, 2006, after heart surgery. Even now, his work helps us find meaning in the many ways people live.
