Ralph Linton was a famous American anthropologist. An anthropologist is a person who studies how people live. He was born in Philadelphia in 1893.

Linton loved to explore. He went on many trips to learn about new cultures. He traveled to the Marquesas islands in the Pacific. He also went to Madagascar. In Madagascar, he wrote a book about a group called the Tanala.

Linton had big ideas about how society works. He taught us about status and roles. Status is a position a person holds. A role is the way a person acts in that position. He said some status is given to us at birth. This is called ascribed status. Other status is earned through hard work. He called this achieved status.

He worked at many places like Harvard and Yale. He also worked at the Field Museum of Chicago. He studied old tools and art. His wife, Adelin, was also his partner. She helped him write many books. One famous book was The Tree of Culture. She finished it after he died in 1953.
