Symbolic anthropology

language culture Maturity 11-13 Next article →

People use symbols to share meaning. A symbol is a sign that stands for an idea. Symbolic anthropology is the study of these signs. It helps us understand how people live in a group.

Clifford Geertz was a famous thinker in this field. He called his way the interpretive approach. He said culture is like a web of meaning. People spin these webs themselves. He used a tool called thick description. This means looking closely at many small details. This helps us see why people act in certain ways.

Victor Turner had a different view. He used the symbolic approach. He thought symbols help move people to act. He studied the Ndembu people in Africa. He saw how people deal with fights. He called this social drama. He said these dramas have four steps. First, there is a breach. Next, a crisis happens. Then, people try to redress the problem. Last, they reach reintegration. This means things go back to normal.

This study is different from math. It uses tools like stories and psychology. It looks at how people see the world. It helps us find the meaning in human life.
