How do we understand the world? We use symbols to do it. Symbols can be words or even gestures.

George Herbert Mead was a thinker from America. He was born in 1863. Mead believed that people create society through daily talks. He said we use language to plan how others might act. This helps us live together in a shared world.

Mead did not write a book of his ideas. After he died in 1931, his students wrote one. They called it "Mind, Self and Society." The title shows his main ideas. "Mind" is how we use symbols to think. "Self" is how we see ourselves through others. "Society" is where all these talks happen.

Herbert Blumer was a student of Mead. He gave this idea the name "symbolic interactionism." Blumer said that people act based on what things mean to them. These meanings come from talking with other people. We do not just react to things. Instead, we think about their meaning first. This thinking is like an inner talk. We use this to decide how to act in our world.
